Blog Entry 25 of 32 A pundit with plaudits and propositions
Peg has decided to blog to spotlight non-profits you may not have heard of, address local education issues, and provide social commentary on local, state, national and international issues to get things “off her chest." This may induce laughter, or rage, depending on your perspective. Peg is best known as a community activist. After graduating with a UCSB Sociology degree with an emphasis in American Socialization she began writing freelance articles for newspapers. For twenty years she had a special event company. Her first, foremost and favorite role is as mother to her two children. Her minimal spare time is spent writing, reading, gardening, practicing yoga, and planning travel adventures.

SPOTLIGHT ON CARING: The RAIN Garden
Contributed by: Peg Hicks-Moore   on 10/11/2007

Last week a group of volunteers, a healthy amount of them students from Cal Lu, turned a fifty by fifty square foot dirt patch out in front of the RAIN Project Human Services Agency into a resplendent garden in which both staff and families may sit, pause and reflect.

During the flower and tree installation we realized the space really needed a path to the sitting area. I dashed over to Thompson Building Materials in Camarillo, and asked if they would donate any type of rock to make a pathway. Without blinkng, they said "ABSOLUTELY!" and took me back into their large supply yard, and said I could have anything I wanted.

I chose their least expensive ground gravel, and some left over mismatched pieces of slate, but it still totaled over 1000 pounds of gravel and rock. They then generously said they would deliver it the next day, and right as RAIN, they did! The stones were set and the path was shoveled into place that afternoon. It makes the area a lovely congregating spot.

If you are planning hardscape for around your home, check out Thompson Building Materials, they have quite a selection. Thanks also to B&B Do It Center for the boarder stakes, and to John Kasper from Stock Lumber for his help and advice. I love living and working in Camarillo. It is a true community in every sense of the word.
