Where's Mario
Mario was 18 months old - he was rushed to emergency room. Mario was admitted to the emergency room at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara from St. John’s Hospital in critical condition and unconscious; bruising on face, cheek area, under chin, corner of mouth & right ear; a fracture of the right wrist. CAT scan showed subdural hematoma (bleeding causing pressure on brain.) Doctor said the injuries were non-accidental. Surgery performed to relieve pressure on the brain. He also had a broken wrist that occurred 6-10 days before the head injury - also non-accidental. He was placed on life support & not expected to live. Gaudalupe spent a mere 6 months in the county jail. When she was released, she went back to Mexico. Mario was placed in foster home in the care of a nurse who had experience with post-op brain surgery patients. He thrived for over 2½ years. Foster mom taught Mario how to walk, talk & feel safe, even though he continued to have night terrors about his mother. It was during a Christmas party when 3 social workers arrived - unannounced. Driving in a county vehicle, they removed Mario from his safe haven & drove him to Tijuana, Mexico. Even though Mario’s mother had an outstanding felony warrant for her arrest that was featured in the Ventura County Star newspaper three weeks earlier, they still walked little 4-year-old Mario across the border & handed him to his abuser. Why hasn't social workers & judges been held accountable? What about his safety?

Protecting Your Children is not a good enough reason to post the address of a sexual predator.
Need to Know
I have concluded that the Star is bureaucratic and inflexible in
its editorial policy.
Managing Editor John Moore is the messenger who delivered just that
in writing about sex offender Ross Wollschlager. The message is that
the Star will play it safe by not reporting the facts even though they
are a matter of public record. One only needs to Google Wollschlager's
name to find the information.
In stating that the Star would not report Mr. Wollschlagers
whereabouts because he had served his time and met the legal criteria
for release Mr. Moore avoided saying that it was not a 100% opinion of
the experts that he was safe to release.
Expert testimony at a judicial hearing stated that because of a
mental disorder Mr. Wollschlager suffers from volitional impairment
which means he has difficulty, or an inability, to control his behavior.
This was not resolved by serving time in prison and a mental
institution.
Experts also agree that some of the most incurable mental disorders
are those of pedophiles and sexual offenders, a good reason for
apprehension. One should weigh the consequences of not reporting
information the public wants, and should, have against that of the
philosophy that a debt paid to Society is sufficient reason to withhold
information.
Yes, the Star knows the "power of full media release of
information" but the other side of this two bladed sword is that
information withheld can be more dangerous than information revealed.
