A potpourri on the spectrum of Life.
I will pose some questions and statements about: happiness, marriage, divorce, virtues, death, religion, politics, current events, volunteerism and the future of our Country. I also will include comments on movies, TV, restaurants, quotes, trivia, humorous stories, jokes, puns and fictional interviews. I hope I'm able to make you think, agree or disagree with me, amuse you and on occasion, stir up your emotions. Write to me with your suggestions, criticisms, approvals, rants or raves So fasten your seatbelt; it might be a bumpy ride. I hope you enjoy the journey.

Welcome to my first Blog!
I have always been fascinated by this fact: how have your actions, intentionally or otherwise, influenced another person? I define influence in this manner: an act or action that causes a result which would not have been possible without your intervention. When have you done something for someone, a friend or even a stranger, that forever changed their life? A couple of examples will clarify my question.
I met my second wife through a friend of mine, Pat. I described for Pat exactly the type of person I was seeking. Because she had no candidates who were single, she forwarded the request to a friend of hers. Her friend also had no candidates, but she discussed the matter with Irene, a friend of hers with whom she worked. Irene had a friend who was single, lonely, and desirous of meeting a decent and honest man. That person was Nemesia, my future wife.
So it took three people to create the chain that produced the desired result. Had there been any broken links in the chain, the net result would have been different. However it was Pat who was the catalyst, the person who took the initiative to fulfill my request. Without Pat, I would have never met Nemesia Maque, my beloved wife. I am forever indebted to Pat and the other two people who were instrumental in giving me the opportunity to meet Nemesia, thus changing my life in a way I could have never imagined.
A second example regarding the influence we have on others is best illustrated by an incident that occurred some years ago. I was aware that Dr. Roger Leir, one of my best friends, possessed an ongoing interest in UFO's. One evening after dinner at my house, I showed him a lengthy article in our local newspaper, The Star Free Press, about an upcoming meeting of MUFON, (Mutual Unidentified Flying Object Network). The meeting was to be held in Thousand Oaks. The article discussed the agenda of the meeting and gave a detailed explanation of MUFON organization. The article ignited Dr. Leir's interest so we agreed to attend the meeting.
His introduction to the local MUFON meeting the following week precipatated a chain of events that resulted in profound changes in the life of Dr. Leir. His interest in Podiatry was subordinated by his fascination and awareness of the worldwide interest in the field of UFO's. Before leaving the meeting, he joined MUFON and attended the monthly meetings. He accepted the position of Medical Director for the group. A couple years later, when the current director resigned, he was elected Section Director.
While attending a MUFON meeting in Los Angeles, Dr. Leir met a man who was doing research on UFO related matters and needed his help. Working together for the next few years, they teamed up for a series of surgeries to remove foreign objects
from the feet and arms of various patients. Dr. Leir was able to prove that the objects he removed were, 'not of this earth' thus proposing that the objects were 'alien implants.' Dr, Leir incorporated his findings into lectures for MUFON and the scientific community. He ultimately became famous and found, to his delight, that the media sought him out for interviews. Over the years he has written and published five books on UFO's. His unique research became the subject of worldwide interest and as such, he has been invited to speak at UFO conferences throughout the world including Australia, Brazil, Japan, Ireland, Europe, Turkey, plus countless cities in the USA. He has participated in numerous interviews for documentaries on UFO's and the paranormal. His next appearance will be on the History channel in February.
Dr. Leir's active participation and interest in UFO's can be traced back to the article I gave him to read about the local MUFON meeting. That was nearly 15 years ago. Would Dr. Leir have found out about the MUFON meetings without my help? That is a question perhaps even he could not answer. Was I the person who provided the link that sent Dr. Leir on a path to his extraordinary accomplishments resulting in a sea change in his life? I'm convinced I did.
If these two examples from my own experience serve to point out how vital the casual influence of another person can affect the future of another person's life. This phenomenon happens so frequently, we often tend not recognize it or even to think about it.
If you have examples of similar experiences, then write to me and explain in detail how you have influenced someone's life, either by accident or on purpose.
Here's a bit of trivia: Name the movie and the character who spoke these lines. "You clinking, clanking, clattering collection of caliginous junk." If you need a hint, drop me an email and I'll send you a clue.
Observation: teaching a child to not step on a caterpillar is as valuable to the child as it is to the caterpillar.
Because I collect quotes, I'll close each Blog with a quote.
