Discretionary Attention
We all have some portion of our attention that we can consciously direct. Truth be told, the higher this percentage, the happier we are.
Most of us feel obligated to pay attention to the mechanics of life; earning a living, paying the bills, filling the car up with gas, etc. Then there are times when we realize we are free to focus on anything we want. In those times do we think of sex, money, relationships, read novels, watch TV, sleep or something else? It's what we do with our discretionary attention that makes all the difference in our life.
Because whatever we focus on becomes a bigger part of our life, it's worthwhile to take stock of where we focus our discretionary attention. If we focus on loving relationships, they grow. If we focus on resentments, they grow. If we focus on alignment with that which is true, that grows.
We have a mind and I believe we have a responsibility to our selves to use that mind productively. Part of what that means is to be conscious of where we place our discretionary attention.
