In this modern age of multiple forms of communication you would think it would be far easier to find updated, real-time information about what is going on in the community, state, and world. However, using my radio and television to learn about the recent California fires left gaps in my education.
Those of us in Camarillo were surrounded by the Canyon Fire in Malibu (4,500 acres), the Nightsky Fire in Santa Rosa Valley (35 acres), the Ranch Fire North of Lake Piru and Fillmore (56,000 acres), the Magic Incident 3 miles east of the Ventura County Line (2,800 acres), and in SB County the Sedgewick Fire (710 acres). The sky was black, and it wasn't evident how close any of them were.
Either I had to listen to talk radio about other topics, or listen to music in between short blurbs on fire conditions. For television we have DISH network, and our package of shows through our satellite feed did not provide us with local programming. I could watch an LA station describe the Malibu fire in detail, but receive little word on the Nightsky fire less than10 miles from my home.
