Fruits of their labors

When you think of youth fundraising, you generally think of cookies, brownies, candy bars and other baked goods being hawked door-to-door by youngsters in uniform. While that works for some, it certainly won't fly with this non-conformist group of kids.

The youth group at Peace Lutheran Church in Camarillo is raising money for a trip to the National Lutheran Youth Workers Conference in Orlando, Florida by selling-of all things-avocados. That's right, the stuff you make guacamole with.

The kids have been selling the dark green fruit, fresh-picked from the church's own orchard of trees, for the last two weekends to passers-by on Las Posas Road.
Youth group members have been busy flagging down cars and other on-lookers to pick up bagfuls of the fruit to finance their nearly July trip to the Sunshine State.

The National Lutheran Youth Workers Conference features keynote speakers, music, community building, and a daily Bible study. Additionally, workshops will cover a range of practical and theory-based topics.

Church leaders say thus far the kids have raised a total of about $850 toward their trip-meaning they have a long road ahead of them.

Determined to meet their goal, the small group of 8 to 10 will once again be taking to the streets over the next few weeks hoping and praying donations will continue to come their way.
