Training Scheduled Monday, January 7
Start the New Year off right by learning how to lead the popular RSVP Bone Builders osteoporosis prevention exercise classes during the newest instructor training. Not only will you help seniors live independently longer, but you'll find yourself growing stronger and more flexible as well.
Oxnard RSVP has scheduled a workshop to train new Bone Builders instructors for Monday, January 7. All instructors are volunteers, ages 55 and older. Come be part of an energetic, supportive cadre and help yourself while helping others.
The free Bone Builders classes, which include balance exercises and strength training with light weights, are held twice weekly at sites around Oxnard. Anyone with a positive attitude, enthusiasm and an interest in staying healthy can lead the class. No experience is required. It is an excellent opportunity to volunteer with a friend as instructors usually teach in pairs.

Falls are a serious public health problem among older adults, which is why Bone Builders incorporates balance exercises into each class. In the United States, one of every three people 65 years and older falls each year, and the most common fall-related injuries are osteoporotic fractures, according to Cornell University. The total direct cost of all fall injuries for people age 65 and older in 1994 was $20.2 billion.
The City of Oxnard Senior Services office received funding from the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging to initiate the RSVP Bone Builders program. RSVP is a volunteer recruitment and placement program, helping people 55 and older find volunteer positions that match their interests, talent and available time. The Oxnard RSVP has almost 600 members. To learn more about being an RSVP member or for help finding a volunteer position, call 385-8019.
The Senior Services Program is a division of the City of Oxnard Recreation and Community Services Department.
