The Loaves and Fishes Program at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Westlake Village celebrated its sixth birthday this month at a "thank you event" by giving out gifts to all parishioners. After all services the first Sunday of this month, each person was given a small bag containing a hug and a kiss--Hershey's, that is. The thank you message was labeled with the results from this year's many collections. In its six-year history, the program has collected more than 13,500 bags of food, which were donated to social agencies in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties for distribution to those in need. The thank you gifts were appropriate because the congregation's participation is key to the success of the program whose motto is "feeding the hungry, one bag of food at a time."
The Loaves and Fishes Program was modeled after Project Response developed at St. Paschal's Catholic Church in Thousand Oaks. Over the past six years, what began as a simple monthly food collection has grown to include six outreach programs under one umbrella. Loaves and Fishes now coordinates separate collections for food, baby items, school supplies, clothing for women returning to work, First Communion clothes and care bags for the homeless. The generous people at St. Jude's are giving their time, talent and resources to share with those in need.
