Sometimes I wonder if I am ruining my kids with all of our summertime fun? Sounds contradictory, doesn't it? But it is true, I do wonder about it.
I wonder if when they are older if they are going to put their job in jeopardy because they decided to call in "sick" and take off to the beach since that is where they should be anyway. I wonder if they will suffer from depression when the summer hits because they have to work instead of having fun. Will their health suffer because, though the sun beckons, they forsake soaking in it's rays because they have given up their summers? Or will their health suffer because of forsaking their jobs and responsibilities to worship the sun and end up with skin cancer?
Or, worst of all, will they take a job with the school district where they will not be paid what they are worth or enough to support themselves just so that they can have summers off (following their mother's example)?
However, does not a good life require childhood memories that bring a smile to one's face in adulthood? Remember that afternoon when you landed the perfect dive or soaked everyone with the most awesome canonball? Rememer when you rode that wave all the way in when no one thought that you could catch it? Remember those trips to seven-eleven when you came back with nothing but junkfood but spending all of your allowance was worth it?
Every summer, I wonder about all of these little things, but I still come to the same conclusion: Yes, I am probaby ruining my children without even knowing all of the actual consquences. But, hey, I am going to be blamed for it anyway, right? So, why not have some fun with it?
