Open from 8 to 12 on Thanksgiving morning, the Camarillo Family YMCA was bustling with people "working out before they pigged out!" The indoor bicycles were filled to capacity with 'spinners' who each donated $5 to the YMCA's scholarship fund or brought toys for the "Toys for Tots" program, and a group of joggers took part in a brisk 5K fun run around Village at the Park.
Out on the playing fields an eager group of about 40 children ranging in age from 3 to 12+ participated in the Y's first annual "Running of the Turkey". Leroy Thomas, Adult Wellness Director, who also led one of the earlier cycling classes, played the part of the turkey. After dividing the children into three different age groups, Thomas led each excited band on a merry chase as parents cheered them on. The children chased the turkey until a 'golden feather' was plucked off the bird. The three winners were then granted the privilege of 'brining' the turkey - pouring a large container of water over Thomas! There were rumors that he relished the cool dousing after his vigorous bout of morning exercise. Thomas' clever turkey outfit was hand-sewn by YMCA staff member De Molitor's mother, who was out here visiting from Wisconsin for the holidays.
This was the first year of this event and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Camarillo Family YMCA is located at 3111 Village at the Park Drive in Camarillo. For information about future events or membership, please call (805)484-0423 or visit www.ciymca.org.
