A classical figurative artist from Texas will spend a month painting and exhibiting her works in California Lutheran University's Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture.
"Paintings by Cyn McCurry" will be on display from Saturday, Sept. 29 through Thursday, Oct. 25. As CLU's first artist-in-residence, she will use the gallery as her studio during that time so visitors will be able to watch her work develop.
An opening celebration is slated for Saturday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m., and a closing reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m.
McCurry's paintings, commissioned portraits and murals hang in private collections nationwide. She is represented by galleries in New Mexico, Colorado and Texas.
Although she has been painting since childhood and sold her first canvas at age 11, she avoided formal training and instead immersed herself in the works of great masters such as Leonardo DaVinci. She has adopted classic techniques as her own, deftly telling the tale of a modern woman in the dialect of another time.
McCurry's paintings are intimate, autobiographical and dominated by feminine themes. She works intuitively, approaching her canvas without preconceptions and winding together strands of emotion and experience into her luminous compositions.
"Cyn creates a very spiritual body of work that transcends everyday ideas," said Michael Pearce, curator and CLU art professor. "I hope the students will be challenged to look beyond the ordinary."
The Artists and Speakers Series, the Kwan Fong Gallery and the Art Department are sponsoring the exhibit and artist-in-residence program.
The exhibit and receptions are free.
The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It is located in the Soiland Humanities Center at 60 W. Olsen Road in Thousand Oaks.
