Acts of Light author Nan Deane Cano will share the beauty and grace of the Martha Graham Dance Company in a multi-media presentation at 2:30 pm on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the Grant R. Brimhall Library.
"We believe this informative and entertaining program has wide appeal, and has particular interest for aspiring writers, and anyone interested in dance or photography," said Sue Pelman, Library Adult Services Supervisor.
The book is the first to comprehensively survey Graham's dances in full color digital photography. John Deane served as the promotional photographer for the Graham Dance Company, giving him unprecedented access. The stunning photographs are accompanied by personal interviews of the newest generation of the Graham Company dancers including their approach to and interpretation of classic dances.
Additionally, the book draws essays, poetry, and excerpts from Graham's own notebook offering a narrative, dramatic and philosophical base for each dance and gives reflections on its contemporary relevance for today's audience, providing an insightful testimony to Graham's living influence on American culture.
"...Capture(s) the stark, emotionally expressive quality of the choreography as performed over the past three years."
