Blog Entry 18 of 21 BeccaBlog
Hi everyone, I'm glad you found your way to the blog section. I've been asked, "What's a blog?" more than a few times since starting to talk to people about YourHub.com. Blog is simply short for Web log and you can think of it as an online journal where you can wax philosphic on subjects large or small, international or personal. Just remember if you choose to add the blog to the YourHub listings, anyone can read what you write. My blog, most likely, will just be about random thoughts and observations and hopefully will spur conversation either on local topics or local effects of wider-reaching topics. Please feel free to leave comments with your own views -- or better yet, start your own blog and write about it!

In the last few weeks, I've had the best time meeting folks from around the county who've wanted to learn more about YourHub.com.

This whole citizen journalism concept is a new thing for a lot of people and they have many questions, lots of excitement and even a little skepticism about it, as I've found out at some of the YourHub 101 community meetings our staff has hosted throughout the county.

It's been a treat putting faces to names I recognized from the Hub and exciting to meet people who are planning to share news about their neighborhood group, Little League teams, schools, philanthropic organizations and more.
For those who don't know, citizen journalism, also called community or participatory journalism because the community participates in gathering and writing the news, is all about YOU deciding what "the news" is. And it's what YourHub.com is all about.

Sometimes there is news the Star doesn't cover for a number of reasons. Sometimes the event might not have wide enough appeal for the county paper, but because YourHub is hyper local with six Web sites in the county, it's the perfect place for your super-local news!

Sometimes the Star simply doesn't have enough reporters to cover all the events we'd like to. Again, this is where you come in. If you attend an event, write about it. Post your photos. (And even if the Star does cover it, YOU may have a different take on it or get some photos we don't so post away!)

And though I love talking to readers and Hub users, you don't have to call and ask if an event would be ideal to write about. If it's important to you, it's ideal.

To the skeptics out there who ask if we're really letting anyone write about anything, the answer is yes. As long as what you write is in good taste -we are, after all, a family-oriented paper- you can post it online (and FYI, we've never had to remove a story due to objectionable content -or any other reason- yet).

If you still have questions about YourHub.com, want some help on how to write a story for the site or just want to meet the staff, please come on out to one of our YourHub 101 gatherings. The next two we have scheduled are in Oxnard and Camarillo, having just held some in the east county.

The Oxnard meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8 at the Boys & Girls Club, 1900 W Fifth St. The Camarillo meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 in the community room at our brand spankin' new facility in Camarillo, 550 Camarillo Center Drive (directly behind the Camarillo Premium Outlet mall).

Also, if have a group interested in hearing more about YourHub.com anywhere in the county, we'd be happy to come out and make a special presentation! Just give Angela Fentiman, our YourHub.com promotions manager, a call at 437-0447.
