Hi everyone, I'm glad you found your way to the blog section. I've been asked, "What's a blog?" more than a few times since starting to talk to people about YourHub.com. Blog is simply short for Web log and you can think of it as an online journal where you can wax philosphic on subjects large or small, international or personal. Just remember if you choose to add the blog to the YourHub listings, anyone can read what you write. My blog, most likely, will just be about random thoughts and observations and hopefully will spur conversation either on local topics or local effects of wider-reaching topics. Please feel free to leave comments with your own views -- or better yet, start your own blog and write about it!

Site for sore eyes or sore sight for eyes?

If you had an opinion either way about the high rise tower proposed near Hueneme Beach, you were probably at the Hueneme city council meeting this week. I'm talking about the 46-story tower that would have been built on a city-owned parking lot along Surf Side Drive, if developers had their way.

I attended the meeting not as journalist Whitnall but as private citizen Becca, just interested in the fate of the area where I spent so much time growing up. In all my time in Hueneme, I don't think I've ever seen a city council meeting so well attended ...I stopped counting at around 300 as more people filed in.

The crowd wore green and red stickers and buttons supporting or opposing the tower and feelings seemed to run fairly strong in both directions but as I sat there, not wearing either, I was incredibly impressed. What impressed me was the process.

It was a civil meeting, in all respects of the word. Sure, the mayor was a little heavy handed for my tastes at a point --but that's liveable-- but the people worked out their differences by talking, letting their voices be heard and then letting the democratic process run its course. Nobody was threatened. Nobody strong-armed or took up arms to get their way. In a week that brought tragedy at the hands of someone who had somehow convinced himself taking up arms was his only option, witnessing a peaceful discussion and conclusion to a disagreement was reaffirming.

How lucky we are to live in a place where we can have disagreements, voice our opinions and then work things out in a peaceful manner...
