Help motivate young people

Jerry Beckerman is looking for a good volunteer to work with high school students.

The Segue Career Program, which Beckerman directs, has received a grant to expand its offerings. If Beckerman can find the right person, he hopes to offer the program in an Oxnard high school.

"The mission of Segue is to help students take responsibility for where their lives are headed, to choose productive careers and to keep off life's negative paths," Beckerman said.

In the best networking fashion, Beckerman made his pitch at Thursday's breakfast meeting of the Gold Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. About 50 members of the group met in the community room at the Ventura County Star's new headquarters.

Chambers of commerce thrive on networking. At these types of morning events, everyone who attends gets a chance to make a short personal commercial. Several members mentioned how they had either picked up or referred business to other members in the room.

And occasionally a bit of political news emerges.

Attorney Richard Francis, who has his office in Oxnard, used his moment to mention that he is exploring a run for Congress. Francis, who served several years on the Ventura City Council, thinks he may have a chance against incumbent Rep. Elton Gallegly.

Sometimes the news is personal.

Pattie Braga of the Ventura County Credit Union thanked everyone for showing up on her birthday. The crowd burst into a spontaneous Happy Birthday song.

Other times, the chambers use the gathering for short presentations, such as the one Beckerman made.

The team leader volunteer he is hoping to find would work with the high school for 10 to 15 hours a week. The position involves combing the community to arrange speakers and connecting with teachers and administrators.
