A local Rotary club will give citizenship certificates to fifth grade students at two Ventura elementary schools next month.
Over the years, members of the Rotary Club of Ventura Marina have produced and distributed awards for students moving on to middle school in the fall.
The certificates are tied directly to behaviors that help foster a civilized society: kindness, respect, responsibility and courtesy.
"The kids like it, and the parents like it," said club president Michael Orman, at the group's meeting Wednesday morning. "The staff likes it. It's a simple, nice thing that we can do every year."
These sorts of recognitions are happening throughout Ventura County as the school year winds down. Service groups from Simi Valley to Oxnard are distributing scholarships and awards. The Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks, a group to which I belong, had
a similar student recognition program
earlier this month.
The schools are doing the same thing. In most cases, the recognitions will be for academic or athletic performances.
A certificate of achievement is a small thing. But it reinforces good and growing citizens. Refrigerators and bulletin boards throughout Ventura County soon will be adorned with these simple sheets of paper acknowledging their accomplishments.
