Disabled housing opens in Port Hueneme

A renovated apartment complex in Port Hueneme will soon provide homes for developmentally disabled residents of the city.

The eight-unit building on a quiet side street was dedicated Friday morning before a group of about 30 people.

"We often talk about the problems and what needs to be done about them," said Port Hueneme Mayor Maricela Morales before cutting a red ribbon. "To see the solution is something to celebrate."

The apartments will provide housing for at least four and up to eight clients of ARC Ventura County, the countywide agency that has helped the area's developmentally disabled since 1954.

Some tenants were expected to move in over the weekend, said Jim White, ARC's director of transportation and development. One of the units still needs work on the bathroom to accommodate a wheelchair, he said.

The site is close to Naval Base Ventura County, a bus stop and shopping.

"Many of our people who are going to be living here work at the base, so they can walk to work," White said.

The city's Redevelopment Agency purchased and renovated the building, which had been rundown, for about $1.5 million.

The two-story building has been painted and refurbished inside and out. Bright blue and yellow tiles in a diamond pattern on the front wall give the building a spot of color from the street. New grass and landscaping appears to have taken root.

Each of the one-bedroom units includes a small carpeted living room, a dining area and a bedroom with an adjoining bathroom. The kitchens include a refrigerator and stove.
