Citizen journalism draws Ventura group
Contributed by: Michael Hoffman   on 10/24/2007

A dozen Ventura County residents gathered in Ventura on Tuesday evening to learn about citizen journalism, the emerging media trend where people post their own news, opinions and blogs on community websites.

The interests represented at the meeting ranged from those who hoped to promote their businesses to organization members who wanted to ensure that the word got out about their upcoming events.

Darlene Ketola and her husband Robert were there to learn how to use YourHub.com, the Ventura County Star's citizen journalism website, to promote her counseling business.

Ed and Carol Gafford hoped to pick up tips on promoting their dance classes.

Nikki Noonan represented Sacred Heart School while Shirley A. Bertolino was there to learn about how to best get the word out about the Camarillo Quilter's Association.

Rafaela Frausto spoke about her group Constructing Connections while Mari Crawford was there for Diamond Rock Kids & Expressions.

The Broken Rope Foundation, a native American group that organized an intertribal gathering last year, was represented by board member Joe Asebedo and Jackie Ciccolella. Cindy Piester wanted to learn how to use citizen journalism to get the word out for political organizations while Bill Green was looking for an outlet for his writing.

The group met at the ARC Community Connections center in midtown Ventura. Mary Kay, the facility's manager, allowed the YourHub.com group to use the room for the evening.

During the course of the seminar, community members learned ideas behind citizen journalism, saw examples of how others are using the capabilities and got practical tips on writing good stories and taking solid photographs. The evening's presenters included Michael Hoffman, YourHub.com general manager, and YourHub.com editor Rebecca Whitnall.

The next two YourHub.com seminars will be held Nov. 13 in Thousand Oaks and Nov. 20 in Oxnard. Both sessions start at 6:30 p.m. Click here for additional information.
