PORT HUENEME SEEKS MOTTO FOR 60TH ANNIVERSARY
Contributed by: City of Port Hueneme E-News on 12/14/2007

Port Hueneme residents and officials are gearing up to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the City, incorporated on March 24, 1948. One exciting aspect of next year's celebration will be the adoption of an Official City Motto. The City is inviting community members to help with the endeavor in a city-wide contest to choose a motto that describes the unique vision, values, beauty, or character of Port Hueneme.

The contest begins immediately and is open to Port Hueneme residents. Participants must submit their idea for a motto on the official entry form, found on the City's website: http://www.ci.port-hueneme.ca.us/motto.pdf. Entries must be mailed or delivered to City Hall no later than February 1, 2008 at 5 p.m.

Entries will be reviewed (without the name of the submitter) and the list narrowed down for selection by the City Council at its March 5, 2008 regular meeting. The winning motto will be adopted by Ordinance at the Council's March 19, 2008 meeting. The motto's author will receive special honors at that March 19 meeting as part of the Council's 60th Anniversary community reception.

Throughout its 60 years, the City of Port Hueneme has used various marketing phrases to express the ideal of the City's identity, such as "The Pearl of California's Gold Coast," or "The Friendly City by the Sea," but never had an official motto adopted by Council.

The Hueneme School District is planning to distribute the motto contest entry forms in its schools located in the City and ask teachers to implement it as a lesson in civics.

Besides being posted on the City of Port Hueneme website, entry forms will be mailed in the City's water utility bills and available at City Hall, the Community Center, the Ray D. Prueter Library, and Naval Base Ventura County.

Council Member Norman E. Griffaw, who made the recommendation to the Council to adopt a City Motto, said, "This is an exciting opportunity to hear from the people about their inspiration for and about Port Hueneme."

Mayor Toni Young said, "Whether it highlights the scenery, the citizenry, community values or vision, I'm looking forward to marking our City's 60th anniversary with a fitting motto."
