Come hammer with Habitat
Contributed by: Nancy Stehle on 1/27/2007

Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County continues building in south Oxnard at Hueneme Rd and Salvator (just east of Saviers Rd). Five homes are under construction by volunteers. Most Saturdays from 8 to 4, a variety of adults, and students from Pepperdine, CLU and various high schools in the county show up to hang dry wall, help frame or sheath, dig ditches, build fences or any number of the myriad of jobs associated with building a home. And every Sat some of our faithful volunteer cooks come serve a home made lunch - chili, lasagna, spaghetti - you never know what awaits. Soon these homes, six in all, will be occupied by the farmworker families who work side by side with the volunteers on Saturdays. After completing more than 500 hours of "sweat equity" these families will move from their current substandard housing to a home they will pay for over30 years with a no interest mortgage held by Habitat.
