itizen journalism as we know it at the Ventura County Star is changing. With the new year comes a new look, a new site, new print format and new opportunities ...with the same citizen journalism concept: news about and by YOU. That's why we're calling it YourNews.
According to Star Digital Content Manager Bruce McLean, whose staff is developing the new site, using YourNews will be much like using YourHub (though there are hints the site will run faster - hurrah!). We're keeping the feel of the new site close to what you're used to, with a place for stories and photos, blogs and an events calendar and a similar process to enter them.
What changes, besides the name, is the integration and interaction with the Star's main Web site, www.VenturaCountyStar.com, and thus much greater exposure to your stories - to the tune of more than 600,000 unique visitors a month.
There will still be a dedicated citizen journalism site (at VenturaCountyStar.com/YourNews) but as of Jan. 1, when you visit the local Simi Valley Star news page online, for example, there will also be links to Simi Valley YourNews articles.
Your stories will also be better integrated into the paper itself; instead of a separate tab-sized pullout section, stories selected from the site will appear in two pages right in the local section of Tuesday's paper.
The YourNews staff, Julie Littman and I, will still be available to answer questions, walk you through posting items and give talks to your organizations about using the site and the growing citizen journalism movement. We'll also continue our community workshops where we cover all the basics -watch for details about the first workshops planned for mid January. Julie can be reached at 437-0296 or jlittman@VenturaCountyStar.com. Get in touch with me at 437-0297 or rwhitnall@VenturaCountyStar.com. We're real people on the line and we love to talk with readers!
I hope you're as excited as I am about this change. I see it as giving community members a greater voice than ever before and truly making you part of the Star news, working with the paper to provide the most local news possible.
As always, see you online,
Rebecca Whitnall
