Citizenship is obtainable, but for some a struggle
Contributed by: Reyna V. O'Neil on 11/5/2007

Immigrants want to be part of this great country in overwhelming numbers. Undocumented workers are trying to find ways in which they can be in this country legally. The newly immigrant population has great interest in learning English and there are long waiting lists for those interested in learning English. El Concilio del Condado de Ventura sees over 33,000 people a year interested in the services that are provided in our Oxnard location. The most common reasons we see people is for Citizenship/Immigration applications and classes but also for English as a Second Language classes.

In a 2006 study by the Pew Hispanic Center, it was identified that when immigrants were asked if they should speak English to be part of American society or not, the response by foreign born persons was YES by 57% and YES by 52% by native born. From those who were immigrants and spoke Spanish, 56% said yes. Along party affiliations, Democrats - 52% said yes, Independent - 58% said yes, and 64% of Republicans said yes. Now that we all agree that English should be spoken, the next question is how do we help those who are not literate in their primary language?

How does one teach ABCD if there is no point of reference as to what ABCD is? Well, El Concilio would like to start with A to D in Spanish before we can teach the same in English. Assist us in raising the funds so that these Spanish Literacy classes are available to all who are applying for citizenship/immigration today by sending your donation to:
