Does your dentist or dental hygienist routinely check the tissues of your mouth for oral cancer? They should. Oral cancer is one of the most curable cancers especially when it's caught early. Yet one person in the United States dies every hour from oral cancer, primarily due to late detection. Even thought tobacco use and heavy alcohol use are major risk factors, 25% of oral cancers occur in people who don't smoke or have any other risk factors.
According to the National Cancer Institute, in California last year there were 3,192 new cases and 852 deaths attributed to oral cancer. The disease is increasing amoung women and those affected with the human papilloma virus. Reasearchers have also reported that chronic gum disease can lead to oral cancer. That makes it all the more important that adults, especially those over 40, have annual oral cancer exams.
There is now a new screening tool to aid in the detection of oral cancers. The Vizilite Plus technology approved by the FDA assists the dental professional in the early detecetion of oral abnormalities including premalignant lesions and oral cancers. The Vizilite exam uses a mouth rinse and a chemiluminescent light wand to improve the dental professional's abilities to identify, evaluate and monitor abnormal areas before they advance to a life threatiening stage. When oral cancer is caught early, treatment is 90% successful . To be checked for oral cancer see your dentist or dental hygienist.
