Filling the Need by Returning RNs to the Workforce
On 12/21/2006
Contributed by: William Rusmiselle on 1/28/2007

On December 21, 2006, I was honored to attend the graduation ceremony of Sylvia Schmidt and Karen Hillman from Ventura, Mona Mansfield-Erhardt from Ojai, and Jean Nishimori, Jane Smith and LeeAnn Harper from Camarillo. The graduates were R.N. Interns from a program at Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association created to address the critical shortage of nurses in Ventura County, and were selected from a pool of registered nurses who had not practiced nursing for over five years. They successfully completed a 16-week program consisting of classroom instruction, clinical lab and supervised clinical experience. These nurses managed the care of patients in the home under the supervision of experienced RNs. During the ceremony all of them talked about the hard work and sacrifices, and expressed their gratitude for those who helped them to be successful. The result of their presence was that the patients had a reduced number of hospitalizations and emergency room visits because of telemonitoring, patient education and early detection of complications. Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association is Ventura County's oldest home health care agency, helping residents since 1947. Their motto is "Home is where the heart is" because they care about this community. To learn more about Livingston Memorial, vist their website livingstonvna.org.
