The Downtown Center for the Arts is pleased to announce its fourth exhibition of the 2007 season entitled
Contemporary Composites featuring conceptual artist, Gines Guillen. The exhibition, which runs from July 26 through September 2, will present a selection of works on paper and metal. The works are beautiful but can be jarring and unsettling. The images are mainly from Spain with a few works depicting Oxnard.
The artist wants the viewer to see things in a new way, to consider other ways of seeing our world. In his own words: "I would like to invite you, the viewer, to take a voyage for which the only luggage you need are your eyes, your memories or your sense of aesthetics", says Guillen. "I want your attention and then your opinions and ideas so that we may dialogue."
Gines Guillen was born and raised in Murcia, Spain and studied at Ventura College, Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, and Cal Arts in Valencia where he received his MFA studying with John Baldessari. After retiring from business in Spain, he returned to his art of positioning non-thematically related images. A process he developed while studying at Cal Arts. Guillen has been part of collective shows at Gallery Atellier in Geneva, Switzerland and LAICA, Spain and a one-man show at Galeria Yerba, Murcia, Spain.
Guillen will be present for a reception at the gallery on Thursday, August 16, from 5 pm to 7:30 pm.
Located next to the Carnegie Art Museum in Downtown Oxnard, Downtown Center for the Arts presents Contemporary Fine Art featuring Latino Artists. Hours at the gallery are Thursday through Sunday 1 pm - 5 pm. For more information about the exhibition call George J. Sandoval at (805) 798-0830 or visit
