Organizers of the 2007 Camarillo Art & Jazz Festival, set for August 10 - 12, have announced the headline entertainment for the three-day event that takes place in venues throughout Camarillo.
The festival kicks off Friday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. with a free "Opening Night Concert" in Constitution Park (corner of Carmen Drive and Paseo Camarillo) with jazz keyboardist Gregg Karukas featuring vocalist Ron Boustead. "Gregg is one of smooth jazz's most dynamic and inspiring live performers," says Maggie Kildee, festival spokesperson. His rich keyboard sounds run the gamut from eclectic jazz to seductive Brazilian colorings to hypnotic smooth grooves. Karukas has released 10 solo CDs, with his latest, Looking Up, filled with melodic, rhythmically diverse sounds and his trademark sophisticated acoustic piano melodies.
On Saturday, August 11 at 8:15 p.m., renowned sax performer Eric Marienthal and his band will take the stage at the Studio Channel Islands Art Center at Cal State University Channel Islands for a "Gala Evening Under The Stars." "Eric is one of the most acclaimed sax players in contemporary jazz today," says Kildee. "He's played with the who's who of jazz and we're thrilled that he's coming to Camarillo."
Among Marienthal's 11 solo CD's is his latest, Got You Covered. Six of Marienthal's recordings have made it to the top 10 of the National Contemporary Jazz Radio Charts and two have reached number one.
To start the evening, the Studio Channel Islands Art Center will open its doors from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for studio tours and an art exhibit. Dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. followed by a live art auction at 7:30 p.m.
As a warm up for the Saturday evening gala concert and art exhibition, art and jazz lovers can spend the day strolling Ventura Boulevard in Old Town Camarillo to view the works of more than 50 artists and enjoy the sounds of eight local bands and musicians. "All Day Art & Jazz" event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Music venues are Dizdar Park (corner of Glenn Dr. and Ventura Blvd.) and Farmer's Market (2220 Ventura Blvd.). The event is free.
Closing out the festival weekend, on Sunday, August 12 at 2:00 p.m., R&B, jazz and contemporary vocalist Christine Day and a surprise guest perform during "Art and Jazz at the Ranch" at the Camarillo Ranch House (201 Camarillo Ranch Road). "Christine brings a rich, soulful sound to each of her songs," says Kildee. "She makes a tremendously strong emotional connection with her audience." Day has performed with such talents as Richard Smith, Michael Lington, Tony Maiden of Rufus, Chris Standring, Everette Harp, Shilts, Rayford Griffin and Brandon Fields. An art walk and lunch precedes Day's concert.
Proceeds from the weekend concerts support the Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo, the Camarillo Arts Council, the Studio Channel Islands Art Center, the Pat Richards Art Scholarship for a CSUCI student and the Maggie Kildee Fund for the Pleasant Valley Education Foundation.
Ticket prices for Saturday and Sunday concerts are $37.50 (one-day festival seating) and $70 (two-day festival seating). VIP tickets to events and private receptions are also available.
