Contributed by: Theresa Clemen on 9/21/2007

ART HAYCOX SCHOOL in the HUENEME SCHOOL DISTRICT welcomed parents and community members to Back-to-School Night yesterday.Classrooms proudly displayed student work while many teachers showed slide presentations.
Last week, Driscolls Strawberry Association employees gave every student a BRAND-NEW BACKPACK! Students were thrilled with this generous contribution from Driscolls. What a wonderful company with caring people! THANK YOU, DRISCOLLS!
Already this year, Haycox students in 1st-5th have read ONE MILLION WORDS. All of the students, along with the teachers, staff, principal, Jan Lee; librarian, Kellie Swift; and the literacy coach, Tracy Lipsett, encouraged this endeavor. Says Mrs. Lee, "We are proud of our students. English Language Learners gained 10 points as recorded on the API. Go Vikings!"
In May, several students at Haycox won trophies during the (speech) Debate competition in Ventura. Also, HAYCOX sent 20 3rd-5th grade students to the Academic Rodeo at the Ventura County Fair for the first time. Haycox was represented by 20 students-Boy Scout Cub Pack #3253 (Sunshine Rotary Club): Cristobal Dominguez, Mario Esquivel, David Dominguez, Adrian Sapien, Juan Carlos Ramirez, Manuel Jimenez; Girl Scout Junior Troop #637: Elizabeth Ramirez, Erika Sapien, Darlene Hernandez, Bethanie Lewan, Margarita Ramirez, Ruby Gonzalez, Campfire U.S.A.: Vanessa Santillan, Lessly Guerrero, Lorena Navarro, Consuelo Cardenas, Karla Navarro; Boys and Girls Clubs of Port Hueneme and Oxnard: Jose Salgado, Gerardo Salgado, Christopher Grogg, Julio Juarez, and Uriel Juarez.
