Experienced educational leaders join Rio District
Contributed by: Nancy Mayerson on 10/9/2007

The Rio School District opened the '07-'08 school year with the addition of two new principals. Jeffery Turner is at Rio Lindo Elementary and Shirley Shaw, Ph.D., is at Rio Vista Middle School. Both are experienced administrators and have a great deal of experience working in the classroom.

"Jeffery and Shirley are dedicated professionals who are passionate about providing the best education possible to their students, building a strong collegial team and addressing needs of the 'whole child' by working closely with families and supporting the faculty," says Sherianne Cotterell, Rio School District superintendent. "We are proud to have them as part of the district's team."

Turner received his master's degree in educational leadership from Northwest Nazarene College in Idaho and his bachelor's degree in elementary education from Idaho State University. He began his career as an elementary school teacher, later becoming a principal in the Morongo Unified School District, Twenty-Nine Palms. As an educator, he has implemented strategies to improve student achievement and to foster parent and community participation.

Shaw received her doctorate from University of California, Santa Barbara, and her master's degree in instructional technology from California State University, San Bernardino. In addition to her bachelor's degree in biology, Shaw has studied Spanish, mathematics, science and liberal arts. She has worked as a junior high school teacher, assistant principal at Newbury Park and Carpinteria high schools, and was the principal/project coordinator for a program covering Central California that was aimed at reducing the occurrence of parolee repeat offenses through literacy, employability and substance abuse education.

The Rio School District encompasses six elementary and two middle schools. There are close to 4,200 students in the district, which serves the unincorporated community of El Rio, the RiverPark development and portions of the city of Oxnard.
