OXNARD, Calif.-Volunteers will put paintbrushes, trowels and elbow grease to good use at Rio Real Elementary School's Make a Difference Day, Oct. 27. The annual event is part of the largest national day set aside to help others and will focus on beautifying the Oxnard school's landscaping and buildings. Last year, the Rio School District designated El Rio Elementary School for Make a Difference Day efforts.
"Kids, parents and seniors in the community can show their support for the district and Rio Real by making the school more attractive for students, and helping to inspire them with a beautiful environment for learning" says Mike Stubblefield, Make a Difference Day chair. "As a group, we can make a big difference by showing our dedication to the students, the school and the community."
On Make a Difference Day, volunteers will tackle a variety of landscaping projects, including weeding the school's vegetable and ornamental gardens, filling gopher holes in the grassy playground area and possibly expanding the vegetable garden plot. The group may also collaborate with El Rio Senior Little League to create a baseball field.
Planters may also be installed outside the classrooms so classrooms can have their own garden projects.
To enhance the buildings, students will paint murals on plywood that will be affixed to four exterior walls. Privacy fencing will be added to the existing chain link fence adjacent to the kindergarten playground so the students and nearby residents have more privacy. The students will be invited to paint the new fencing. A vinyl storage shed may also be added to the kindergarten area for outdoor toy storage.
"Last year, volunteers from the community, the district office, United Way, Ventura County Office of Education board and various community organizations came together to 'make a difference' for the staff and students of one of our older schools," says Sherianne Cotterell, Rio School District superintendent. "It was a very gratifying day for all who participated."
To volunteer for this year's Make a Difference Day or to donate money to help purchase supplies, contact Stubblefield at 805-216-2630.
Rio Real serves 407 students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade. It is one of six elementary and two middle schools in the Rio School District. There are close to 4,200 students in the district, which serves the unincorporated community of El Rio, the RiverPark development and portions of the city of Oxnard.
