Rio School District students will get the chance to give back during the Salvation Army holiday toy drive and then later on attend a free movie presentation of "A Plumm Summer." The Salvation Army toy drive begins Nov. 15, alongside its Red Kettle kick off. The district is working with the Salvation Army to help make this year's toy drive a huge success.
A screening of the movie will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 at Rio Vista Middle School and Rio Del Mar Elementary School. The movie presentation is open to the public and admission is free for each family who brings an unwrapped new toy to either of the school's multipurpose rooms.
As part of the toy drive, the Salvation Army partnered with Lisa Guerrero, a sportscaster who has worked on Fox Sports and is currently a correspondent on the TV newsmagazine "Inside Edition." Guerrero and her husband, Scott Erickson, a former Minnesota Twins baseball player, produced "A Plumm Summer." It's a children's movie about two young brothers who go head-to-head with the FBI to crack the kidnapping case of the beloved TV puppet, Froggy Doo. Guerrero and her husband will attend the screening along with other stars from the movie, including Brenda Strong and many of the child actors. She will be giving away Froggy Doo items to the children who attend.
The Salvation Army toy drive runs through the end of the year. Anyone who would like to participate is welcome to help out those in need. The district is partnering with the Salvation Army on this project as a way to encourage students to help others and experience the rewards of giving.
The Rio School District encompasses six elementary and two middle schools. There are close to 4,200 students in the district, which serves the unincorporated community of El Rio, the RiverPark development and portions of the city of Oxnard.
