Free Family Day at the Carnegie Art Museum!
Contributed by: Jeanette LaVere on 7/24/2007

The Carnegie Art Museum will once again offer its popular Family Day event on Saturday, August 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. This free event offers families an opportunity to visit the museum to create and learn about art together in a fun, friendly, and relaxing setting.

The Family Day includes a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy. Museum educators will offer family-friendly tours of the Carnegie's current exhibition, American Glass: John Gilbert Luebtow, and there will also be packets filled with information about the artist, games, and other learning activities for families to work on together. Everyone who completes a packet will receive a kit to take home filled with Crayola markers and crayons and a poster to color.

Three different hands-on art projects, all centered on creating the look of glass, will also be offered. Visitors can learn how to work with plastic Shrinky Dinks to create an organic sculpture that looks like glass, make a "stained glass" window in a classic black frame, or create a sparkling shapes mobile in the outdoor art studio.

For music lovers, members of the New West Symphony will discuss the connections between art and music, and offer a short performance related to the exhibition. Visitors will learn all about the different instruments in a symphony orchestra, and a lucky few will get to make their own instruments.

The Carnegie Art Museum's free Family Day is open to everyone. Reservations are not required, but all activities are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The museum is located in downtown Oxnard at 424 South C Street. Ample free parking is available. For more information, please call (805) 385-8171 or e-mail camcornerstones@yahoo.com.
