Artist's Talk with John Luebtow at the Carnegie
Contributed by: Jeanette LaVere on 7/25/2007

Artist John Gilbert Luebtow, whose glass sculptures are featured in the Carnegie Art Museum's current exhibition, American Glass, will lead a discussion about his work on Saturday, August 18 at 3:00 p.m.

Luebtow will offer a silde illustrated talk featuring an overview of his career and his major commissions, followed by a guided tour of his artwork on display at the museum. Luebtow will discuss the formulation of his art and the engineering considerations required to create and install his large scale sculptures.

Over a thirty year career, Luebtow, whose home/studio is located in Chatsworth, has become one of the most respected names in contemporary glass. Integrating industrial metals with glass and ceramics to create linear sculptures, the artist's unique technical ability has won him international recognition.

Luebtow's large scale projects have included fountains, ceilings, gates, moveable screens, and reliefs. He has designed and created major commissions for American Airlines, Hewlett-Packard, Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and Scripps Research Institute, among others. His artwork has been exhibited at several museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Detroit Institute of the Arts. Luebtow earned MFAs in both ceramics and glass from UCLA.

Reservations for Luebtow's artist talk are appreciated. Please call (805) 385-8158 for more information or to RSVP. Admission to the talk is free for museum members and a $3 suggested donation for non-members. The Carnegie Art Museum is located in downtown Oxnard at 424 South C Street.
