Oxnard, CA - SCIART West has invited Roxie Ray, painter and co-founder of Studio Channel Islands Art Center , to curate our third art exhibition, "FIRE and FIRE". It is a two-person show featuring the ceramic sculptures of Kathleen C. Waggoner and the encaustic paintings of Karen L. Brown. The reception on Thursday, October 18th marks the kick off of "ART CENTRAL" a joint venture with SCIART West, the Carnegie Museum , Café on A and the Downtown Center for the Arts Gallery. ART CENTRAL will represent a cultural hub for downtown Oxnard 's growing art scene.

Encaustic paint is pigment in a beeswax and resin base, applied in a hot molten state which becomes solid almost immediately. The literal translation of encaustic is to burn in, meaning a new layer must be fused with heat to the layer beneath.

Ceramic is the result of clay being baked at extraordinarily high temperatures. The two mediums, encaustic and ceramic, share the use of fire in the working process, hence the title of the show, "Fire and Fire".

Karen L. Brown is a resident of Ventura and has been exhibiting in the area for over ten years. "Working with a variety of techniques heightens my senses, "writes Brown, "and helps me bring renewed enthusiasm to everything I do. Encaustics, mixed media and digital fine art give me that opportunity. However, I am focusing on encaustic as it offers me, what I consider the best of both worlds."

Kathleen C. Waggoner is a resident of Moorpark and has been exhibiting in the Ventura County area for twenty years. "My most recent series of incised figures reflects an intense interest in and respect for native cultures; indigenous art forms, ritualistic scaring, tattooing and piercing," writes Waggoner, "As a visual artist, I have chosen to create imagery that explores the physical manifestations of emotion and human behavior. Myths, identity and stereotypes are the issues that define and support my current work."

SCIART West is a non-profit organization that is working to provide the community with a cultural hub offering first-class art exhibitions of both local as well as national artists, Meet the Artist programs, four studio spaces for working artists, and workshops for all ages. In keeping with our Mission Statement, as a charitable contribution to the community, all programs are offered free of charge to students.

This exhibition and the Meet-The-Artist programs have been made possible by a generous grant from the Martin V. & Martha K. Smith Foundation.

The Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Foundation was established by Martin V. "Bud" Smith and his wife Martha with the mission "To enhance the quality of life for the residents of Ventura County." Bud, the leading land and business developer in Ventura County for more than 50 years, and his wife Martha hoped that the Foundation would involve future generations of their family in continuing their appreciation of Ventura County and their care and concern for strengthening the community. Bud and Martha Smith's four daughters serve on the board of the Foundation, with Marjorie Tegland currently serving as Chair. Joining the Ventura County Community Foundation as a support organization in 1994, the Martin V. & Martha K. Smith Foundation funds nonprofits in Ventura County through an annual grant program, with an emphasis on organizations serving the Oxnard plain.
