New Fall Exhibitions at the Carnegie Art Museum
Contributed by: Jeanette LaVere on 9/1/2007

The Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard opens two new exhibitions featuring the work of contemporary California artists Jeff Gambill and David Rivas on Saturday, September 8, 2007. The public is invited to attend the opening reception for the artists on Sunday, September 9 from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Revisit: Jeff Gambill/Dialogue of Generations offers an opportunity to examine the evolution of Los Angeles painter Jeff Gambill's work since the early 1990s. The title of the exhibition makes reference to Mr. Gambill's 1991 painting, Dialogue of Generations, donated by Peter Norton to the Carnegie Art Museum's permanent collection.

Revisiting Mr. Gambill's earlier paintings in the context of this exhibition reveals that the artist'swork has traveled in many directions over time. The artist tends to work in series, focusing on a specific time in his life or on a group of related memories, and endeavoring to make paintings that give concrete form to elusive experiences. However, one constant remains in all of Mr. Gambill's paintings: the simultaneous exploration of abstraction and representation.

Real Abstract: The Photography of David Rivas features abstract works by the Ventura-based artist. All of Mr. Rivas' images are real things, such as a painted wall, a reflection in a window, or a broken bottle, captured on film using a macro lens and a Nikon fm3a film camera. The abstraction in his work is a result of the artist photographing an object's reflection in a warped plastic mirror, or shining a multicolored LED light on an object, altering its appearance. The artist makes enlargements himself in a traditional darkroom using light sensitive paper and emulsion chemicals.

Both exhibitions will be on view at the Carnegie Art Museum through November 18, 2007.

The Carnegie Art Museum is located at 424 South C Street in Oxnard. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00-5:00 p.m. General admission is $3. Free admission is offered Fridays from 3:00-5:00 p.m. For more information, please call (805) 385-8158.
