It wasn't the leprechauns, but the Oxnard Sharks 9-and-under travel baseball team who grabbed the gold on St. Patrick's Day weekend! The team traveled to Huntington Beach to play in the 2007 9th Annual St. Patrick's Day Classic on March 17-18. Playing tough to earn a spot in the championship game, they defeated the Bums, the Sylmar Jayhawks, and the Orange County Black Sox to get a chance to play the So Cal Smash. Playing against the #1 ranked team in Southern California USSSA Baseball, the Sharks gave up only one run and defeated the Smash 6-1. The win capped off a three tournament winning streak which started President's Day weekend in Camarillo in the Vipers Venom tournament, 10 and under division. The following weekend, the Sharks took first place at the 2007 West Coast Clash, Super Series. The team travels to Santa Clarita March 30.
The Oxnard Sharks, along with the rest of the community, are anxiously awaiting the completion of the baseball field that is being renovated at the corner of Second and "H" Streets. After two weeks of demolition and reconstruction initiated by the Sharks, the city took over the project with assurances that the project would be completed within our same time line. We are all looking forward to being able to throw out the first pitch on the new field.
The Sharks teammates include Ryan Abraham, Ramon Gomez, Tony Hernandez, Jeremy Herrera, Turner McDonald, John McGill, Vinny Plymire, B.J. Reyes, Juan Mendez, Frankie Tostado and Jaime Lopez.. Manager Pat McDonald. Coaches Pete Hernandez, Greg Herrera and Phil Shrauger. Sponsors Gene and Delores Hernandez.
