The 9-and-under Oxnard Sharks travel baseball team played host to14 teams from throughout Southern California at Community Park West June 30 - July 1. The 1st Annual Battle at the Beach Tournament sold out in both the 10U and 12U divisions within days of posting. Teams escaping the summer heat from Bakersfield and Santa Clarita enjoyed Oxnard's perfect weather and excellent playing conditions. Even Pacific Palisades teams conceded that Oxnard's climate was more pleasant than theirs.
Throwing the first pitch Saturday morning, Bakersfield Southwest White began their dominance in the 12U division, ultimately winning the Championship while giving up only one run throughout the entire tournament.
The 10U division was a lot more closely contested with a local team, the Ocean View Hawks, ending pool play as the number one seed. The Oxnard Sharks, who barely edged out the Simi Youth All-Stars for the number four seed, earned the chance to play the Hawks. Having scrimmaged one another earlier in the year, the Sharks knew that they were in for a battle. Their hard fought 3 - 1 win put the Sharks in the Championship game against Hart Blue. Great defense by Hart gave them the Championship with a 4-1 win over the Sharks.
In addition to great baseball, another highlight of the weekend was the food. Ivan Daniel and Elishia Lopez couldn't keep the tri-tip sandwiches coming off the grill fast enough for the appreciative patrons. Sharks family members pitched in to help flip burgers and serve hot dogs to keep up with the demand.
Ever since the Oxnard Sharks won a berth in the 9-and-under USSSA World Series, the team has been on a fund raising mission to ensure that every player and their family will be able to travel with the team to Kansas City. The commitment and hard work of every family member not only made the tournament a great success, but put the team one step closer to reaching their fund raising goal. With only two weeks until they board the flight out of LAX to Kansas City, this diverse group of young boys whoinitially came together to play on a Northside Little League All-Star team last summer, can be very proud of their accomplishments on the field and of their outstanding development as dedicated athletes.
Good luck at the World Series and HAVE FUN!!!
