On July 21st, 12 members of the Oxnard Sharks baseball team and 43 family members boarded a plane for Kansas City, Missouri. Their destination? Tiffany Hills Sports Park to play in the USSSA 9-and-under World Series. Due to the generosity of their main sponsors, Gene and Dolores Hernandez, and the numerous financial contributions from family, friends and local businesses combined with the commitment and sacrifices the team made to fund raise and prepare for the competition, this group was in for the trip of a life time.

Out of a field of 37 teams, the Sharks made it to the final eight with only one loss. An untimely and frightening injury to Darius Vines, who fouled a bunt into his eye, left the Sharks without one of their key players against Marshal, the eventual winner. Marshal came into the tournament with a record 40 - 0. The Sharks beat Marshall in pool play 8 - 5, but this time in spite of strong pitching and catching, the Sharks were unable to get the key hits they needed, eventually losing 3-2. The Sharks finished in 5th place.

Congratulations to the Sharks on their great showing. They made quite a name for themselves as the buzz around the park was to look out for the team from California. They were also commended all week long by both their opponents and the officials, as well as the tournament directors, for their good sportsmanship. Way to go team!

Sharks players include Tony Hernandez, Turner McDonald, Ramon Gomez, Jaime Lopez, Darius Vines, Jeremy Herrera, Frankie Tostado, B.J. Reyes, Ryan Abraham, John McGill, Gabe Vargas, and Juan Mendez. Manager is Pat McDonald. Coaches are Pete Hernandez, Greg Herrera, and Ricardo Tostado.

The Sharks are currently ranked 3rd in Southern California and are headed to the USSSA State Tournament August 18/19 at Big League Dreams/Riverside.
