Saturday, September 15 will mark the 23rd annual Coastal Cleanup Day. Simi Valley residents can participate in the worldwide event by joining their neighbors at Rancho Simi Community Park, corner of Royal Ave. and Erringer Rd, for an Arroyo Cleanup. Last year volunteers collected over 4,000 pounds of trash along a two-mile stretch of the Arroyo Simi and another 400 pounds of recyclable metals. Since 1985 over 4 million cigarette butts, 16,000 tires, and 700,000 plastic knives, forks and spoons have been picked up from California beaches. Trash and debris that find their way to the Arroyo will eventually travel to the beach. On its way it may be eaten by birds, animals, and fish, often with deadly results for the wildlife. The debris also degrades the water quality, generates odors, and creates an unsightly mess along the inland waterways and beaches. So, come join us Saturday, September 15 from 9 am to noon to do your part for the environment and your community by helping to clean the Arroyo. Please be sure to wear long pants, study shoes, sunscreen, gloves and a hat. See you there!!
