Students Rewarded with Dippin' Dots
Contributed by: Sulin Romo on 12/12/2006

Thanks to the partnership of the Ventura County Star's Newspaper in Education program with Dippin' Dots over 1,100 students at Colina Middle School celebrated their outstanding citizenship with music and a variety of ice cream flavors during their lunch break on Thursday, December 7, 2006.

The celebration started with Linda Moore a 6th grade teacher at Colina Middle School winning a Dippin' Dots Ice Cream Social and a $200 grant for school supplies. She was randomly selected from over 400 teachers enrolled in the Newspaper in Education program. Ms. Moore, classroom receives free copies of the Ventura County Star on a daily basis to help her keep her students informed in local, national and international news. "As I said, my 6th graders are particularly excited about them and I am always so grateful for the support from our community."

It was an exciting day for most students having lunch with music in the background while being served free Dippin' Dots Ice cream with a variety of flavors from banana split, cookie dough, rainbow, and chocolate. Ethan Arlt, a 7th grade student cheerful claims "Dippin' Dots are so good they put you in a good mood!" Next to him another 7th grader, Stephanie Barlev states, "I love them. They melt in you mouth."

Being guided by the motto, "Work Hard, Make Friends, and Have Fun" students at Colina Middle School had to earn their ice cream. This National Blue Ribbon and California Distinguished School strives to provide each student a safe, nurturing, and well disciplined environment while consistently setting goals that are result oriented. Mr. Shane Frank, Assistant Principal, noted that only students with 100 points were eligible for the Dippin' Dots Ice Cream Social celebration. The "point system" is the core of the school. The goal is for the students to develop self-discipline and learn the skills necessary to monitor their own progress and behavior. All students begin the school year with 100 points. Bad behavior such as being tardy, not following directions, disrespect, food and candy in the classroom is an automatic deduction of 10 points. Any student below 75 points is not eligible for school activities, socials and dances. Principal, Mike Waters commented that out of the 1,145 students enrolled at Colina Middle School about 50 students were not eligible for the Dippin' Dots Ice Cream Social. To be eligible for upcoming school socials the students must make up the points by either serving detention, working with a teacher, or custodian.

Su-lin Romo, Star in Education Manager mentioned that the "purpose of the Dippin' Dots Ice Cream Social partnership was to promote the free educational supplements and newspapers to local educators." Ms. Romo was happy to hear Alexis Sloan, a 7th grader at Colina Middle School mention "Dippin' Dots is really good. My parents read the paper every day. I read the Sunday paper with my dad. We read the columns and comic section."

The Star in Education Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1989 to support literacy on a continuous basis by providing free copies of the Ventura County Star to public, private, and parochial schools in Ventura County. In 2005, thanks to the Foundation's sponsors over 1 million newspapers were distributed to over 180 Ventura County schools.
