Contributed by: Sandee Covone on 2/26/2007

The Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley is pleased and excited to announce the 2006 Youth of the Year, award winners, and new Board of Directors that were honored and installed at our annual Recognition Luncheon held on February 8 th at the Grand Vista Hotel in Simi Valley.

Heartwarming speeches were made by our honored Youths of the Year Jasmine Powell and Quentin Wetherholt.

Quentin Wetherholt is an extremely well-rounded young man that displays great depth of character. He has attended the Club for almost 2 years during which time he has participated in numerous activities including pool, chess, football and basketball. He is a frequent visitor to the Homework Center, and displays an insatiable passion for reading.

As a 6th grader at Sycamore Elementary, Quentin earns excellent grades and participates in many extra-curricular activities, including outdoor school and the Communication for Youth Institute. Through this program, he spends time at Cal State Northridge attending classes as well as writing and delivering speeches. Quentin is also a member of Samurai Spirit Martial Arts, where he has learned much about sportsmanship, leadership, and self discipline through the many classes he has completed.

Quentin's future aspirations include attending USC for his undergrad work, after which he plans to enter medical school to become a surgeon. Quentin has so much to offer the and it is our pleasure to award him as the male Youth of the Year 2006.

Jasmine Powell is a truly extraordinary young lady. She has a loving family that supports her in all aspects of her life including a younger bother that she is an excellent role model for.

Throughout her school years, she has maintained academic excellence and has been recognized for her achievements and extracurricular activities with awards and certificates too numerous to count.

Jasmine has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley since 2001 and volunteered in the Jr. Leader program for two years, giving her time generously to the Club including assisting with special events. She continues to be a leader as a paid part-time staff member and has worked for the club for the last two years. In that time she has given many hours of her time to help with events including our garage sale fundraiser, Annual Family Dinner and Talent Show. She has a nature of giving that is a rare commodity among today's youth.

Jasmine has set high goals for herself and is looking forward to graduating from high school to pursue a college degree majoring in Neuroscience and Philology. With her level of strength and determination, Jasmine has a very bright future ahead of her and the Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley proudly honors her with the prestigious female 2006 Youth of the Year Award.

The Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley also proudly thanked those businesses and individuals in the community that continue to support the Club, contributing to the many valuable programs we offer to the children of Simi Valley. They continue to make this "The Positive Place For Kids!"
