Ventura County Behavioral Health and the Ventura County Limits project recognized the Simi Valley City Council with a "Success Story" Award at their last regular meeting of the year on December 10th, 2007, and local residents applauded the City for putting effective laws into place.
"These types of policies are crucial to changing the dangerous teen drinking culture that threatens our youth on a daily basis," said Kristin Tignac. She
points to local statistics showing that young people have easy access to alcohol, and results often being fights, injuries, sexual assaults and in some cases death.
The award, which was accepted by Mayor Paul Miller, was given to elected
officials for their part in a county-wide initiative to adopt Social Host laws
over the last two years. Simi was the fourth city to adopt the ordinance, which
holds the hosts of underage drinking parties accountable by making them subject to a $1,000 fine.
Members of the Coalition for Simi Valley Youth and Community were in attendance to show their support and appreciation for the Council's action last year, and to highlight the importance of addressing the underage drinking problem.
Dan Hicks, of the Ventura County Limits project told Council members in
presenting the award that the national recognition received by Ventura County
was really due to the commitment and action of local cities like Simi Valley in
making Ventura County a safer place to live. He also thanked the City for
allowing representatives from the Simi Valley Police Department to join members of the Coalition, and other members of the Ventura County Limits partnership, to receive recognition in Orlando, Florida, from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).
