Residents got a BIG surprise at the free Saturday Boot Camp hosted by 805 Boot Camp when the Instructor that day happened to be Chicago Bears Tight End Ryan Wetnight!!
Campers assembled on the sidelines: mats, weights and water and a twinge of fear in their bellies wondering, "what exactly DOES a Pro-NFL Tight End/Special Teams DO to exercise?"
And at 7:00am sharp - they found out.
First things first - warm up stretching. Most campers were over 35 years old so their bones and muscles needed to warm up FOR SURE.
Ten minutes later Ryan jetted off to the stadium bleachers where he led all 50 campers on a winding zig-zag of every step built on BOTH sides of the field. "I did this in hell week for volleyball...30 years ago!" yelled one of the campers attempting to keep it light.
"It was impressive; everyone was there on time and ready to workout. The campers are very dedicated and serious about accomplishing their goals." Ryan said.
The workout consisted of 20 dynamic drills which most mortal men wouldn't recognize. Things like "the Flying 20's", "Snake the Field" and "Gassers" left folks dripping with sweat.
We asked Ryan what he thought the most difficult drill was for the campers. "Everyone has a different body type and level of fitness and will react differently to each exercise. The endurance exercises are usually the toughest (running stadium, snake field) I think everyone did a great job keeping pace and were very determined to finish each drill."
Do you aspire to be an NFL player? Ryan suggests "becoming an NFL player takes tremendous desire and dedication along with a little luck. Physically and mentally you have to be prepared to take advantage of your opportunities and you also need to have coaches, scouts, etc. to believe in your ability to help their football team. I would tell any aspiring athlete to believe in themselves, have confidence, and work extremely hard."
Campers didn't have much gas left at the end of the hour - but the work out kicked off a fantastic day for all. Ryan is planning his next workout at 805 Boot Camp, so stay tuned for the next Free Saturday Boot Camp! If you want to join us or need more details, visit our website
