KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO SENIORS

Kiwanis Club of Simi Valley has awarded scholarships to the following graduates of the class of 2007:

APOLLO HIGH

Andrew
Garcia of Apollo High School will be attending Moorpark College and plans to major in business. Eventually he wants to own a nonprofit business benefiting education for international children. He spearheaded a project that raised money to help educate children in Afghanistan this past year. The funds raised by the Apollo and adult education students paid for school supplies (blue-packs) and three female teachers for girls.

Jessica
Hernandez of Apollo High School will also be attending Moorpark College. Her planned majors are animal training and photography. Her community service centers around fostering kittens, keeping them healthy, aiding control of the population through altering, and finding appropriate homes for the critters. Jessica's mother is Suzanne Hernandez.

SIMI VALLEY HIGH

Jeff
Chuang of Simi Valley High School will be attending UCLA and plans a career in medicine. He has participated in peer tutoring, Key Club (12 th grade representative), and the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District carnivals and classes. His parent is Chyi-Woei Chu.

Jessica Reyes is the second Simi Valley High School graduate. She will be attending Pierce College and playing volleyball. She plans to work with children. Her community volunteer experience was at the Institute of Equestrian Therapy. She was also part of the Teachers of Tomorrow program. Nancy and Tony Reyes are her parents.

ROYAL HIGH

Stasi
Harrell is a Royal High School graduate who will be attending U.S.C. Her major will be print journalism or pre-dentistry. She worked on many service projects including Special Olympics bowling, senior citizens, Relay for Life team captain, and peer tutoring. She served as Key Club Secretary for two years. Her mother is Nancy Harrell.

Samantha Russell also graduated from Royal High School where she served as Key Club President. She will attend Western Washington University and major in marine biology and biochemistry. She has worked as a lifeguard, swim instructor, and Starbucks barista. Her community involvement includes her church youth group, choir, and confirmation mentor. Samantha's parents are Jay and Deanne Russell.

The Simi Valley Kiwanis Scholarship Committee consisted of Keith Barker, Ellie Kokotos, Roberta Leap, and Mary Martin, who read the applications and interviewed the applicants.
