Rio School District to Establish Preschools
Contributed by: Nancy Mayerson on 7/12/2007

Thanks to state and federal funding, First 5 Ventura and community partnerships, the Rio School District is establishing preschool programs at each of its six elementary schools. Beginning this school year, the district will offer an academic preschool program for children 3- to 5-years-old living within the district boundaries.

"Research shows that preschool lays a foundation of social skills, knowledge and self-confidence that paves the way for success throughout children's schooling," said Sherianne Cotterell, Rio School District superintendent. "By having preschool classes at all of our sites, we're providing a neighborhood-based program that's valuable to our students and the community."

The preschool program is free or low-cost to families within the Rio School District. While each school site has its own selection process and set of enrollment qualifications, priority will be given to 4-year-olds and children whose families meet state and federal poverty income guidelines. The program will include half-day and full-day sessions, depending on the site. Class sizes will range from 20-24 students, with a maximum student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1. In fall 2007 available preschool spaces will increase by 82 percent from the previous year, serving more than 240 children. This expansion will make preschool available to approximately half of kindergarteners entering the Rio School District.

To create the program, the district partnered with the Ventura County Office of Education, the Rio Neighborhood for Learning, Child Development Resources, and Child Development, Inc. Funding is provided by the state Department of Education, the federal government and First 5 Ventura.

The Rio School District serves the unincorporated community of El Rio, the RiverPark development and portions of the city of Oxnard. The District strives to provide world-class education to all of its 4,100 students.
