"Raider Rookies" Flag Football At Simi YMCA

Sign-ups are under way for the Simi Valley Family YMCA's "Raider Rookies" flag football league. The 10-week season runs from January 8 through March 18, 2007.

Teams will be formed based on age. The Y-Rookies league will contain two age divisions: ages 4-5 and 6-7. The Y-Winners league will have three divisions: ages 8-10, 11-13 and 14-16. No tryouts are necessary and everyone participates.

"The league is instructional but it's also competitive," says Dave DeMaio, youth sports and parent-child programs director at the Simi Y. "Kids will learn the basics of football and teamwork while getting a workout. The teams will compete against each other."

Practices and games will be at the Simi Valley Family YMCA (3200 Cochran St., corner of Cochran and Galena). Practices will be held once a week with games scheduled for Sundays between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Participants receive a uniform and trophies will be awarded at the end of the season.

The cost is $100 for YMCA members, $110 for program members and $120 for non-members. A $20 late registration fee will be charged for sign ups after January 2. Sign-up forms are available at the Simi Valley Family YMCA or by calling Dave DeMaio at 805-583-5338, ext 236.
