Simi Y Youth Basketball League Sign-Ups Underway

Sign-ups are currently underway for the Simi Valley Family YMCA Junior Lakers/Shooting Sparks Basketball League. The spring season, which includes pre-season clinics for younger players, practices and a 8-week inter-league season begins March 24. The league is for boys and girls ages 4 through 17. The registration deadline is March 12.

Clinics are March 10 and 17 at Lemon Park in Simi Valley. The clinics will be an opportunity to learn basketball fundamentals and allow coaches to evaluate skill levels. Clinics are for kids ages 4 to 12. Each child will be placed on a team in one of six age divisions: ages 4 and 5, 6 and 7, 8 through 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14 and 15 through 17.

"Younger players learn the basic rules, skills and tactics of basketball and that winning is being the best you can be," says Gerard Nelson, the Simi Y's spring and summer camp director. "Older kids learn basketball strategies in a friendly, yet competitive atmosphere."

Practices are once a week and games are held on Saturdays or Sundays and last for about one hour. Program participants each receive a uniform and an end-of-season trophy. All players eight years and old participate in a playoff game.

The league cost is $120, $110 for program members and $100 for YMCA members.
