Autistic Children Can Learn to Swim
Contributed by: Melia Parchman on 8/8/2007

The Easter Seals Aquatic Center specializes in swim lessons for autistic children and adults. In 2005, our Pool Manager, Cecilio Murillo, was approached by a parent who wanted swimming lessons for her daughter who has autism. The older children in the family had learned to swim at a local recreation center, but the youngest daughter was having difficulty fitting into the structured classes. Mr. Murillo undertook the challenge of teaching Samanath A. Today, Sam could, if she chose, join a competitive swim club.

Our swim instruction program now includes 16 people diagnosed on the autism spectrum between the ages of 2 1/2 and 30. We have families driving as much as 90 miles each way for instruction. While not every student will make as much progress as Sam, all families report definite improvements in behavior after starting swimming lessons.

The Easter Seals pool is indoors and always heated to 94 degrees. A new session of lessons begins on September 1. Monthly lessons fees range between $75-$150 for private lessons and $30-$60 for group lessons . Water polo instruction is also available.

The Easter Seals Aquatic Center is located at 10730 Henderson Road near Wells Road (Highway 118) and Highway 126. Students of all abilities are welcomed. For more information, call 805-647-1141 x31.
