'Canvas' paints truth of Schizophrenia in family
Contributed by: Liz GalvAN   on 10/27/2007

Canvas is Joseph Greco's film debut and his story. He recreates some of his childhood experiences watching Schizophrenia take hold of his mother and how the affects isolate him and his father. A sail boat literally helps them salvage what they have for each other ....love.
Why would anyone take in such a heartbreaking movie? A movie about a woman, who is a wife and mother, who is so adored by her husband and 8 yr. old son and is diagnosed with Schizophrenia.
I would.
I have a loved one who was once a productive member of society and when you watch that change after trying to get her to take medication or even fill out forms for social security, you are left feeling powerless when she doesn't. All you can do now is educate yourself and pass it on to her boys, my nephews, and their dad who has raised them after she felt there was only one thing left to do...and that was to leave.
Canvas shows us heartbreak, laughter and the will to go on and move forward.
After watching the movie I left not feeling down, I left feeling more compassion, informed and inspired.
If you feelinspired to support the Mental Health community please go see this movie.
