Blog Entry 19 of 47 What's happening in YOUR neighborhood?
Hi everyone, I'm the YourHub.com editor for the Ventura County Star. I'm glad you found your way to the blog section. If you're not familiar with them, "blog" is simply short for "Web log" and you can think of it as an online journal where you can wax philosophic on subjects large or small, international or personal. Just remember if you choose to add the blog to the YourHub listings, anyone can read what you write. My blog tends to be about random thoughts and observations that hopefully will spur conversation either on local topics or local effects of wider-reaching topics. Please feel free to leave comments with your own views -- or better yet, start your own blog and write about it!

Post about your Fair experiences
Contributed by: Becca Whitnall   on 7/31/2007

It's fair time again; time again for the piggy races and the ferris wheel, so tall it's visible from up and down Ventura State Beach; time for the fair food -from snow cones, funnel cake, salt water taffy, cotton candy and kettle corn to Mackinaw fudge and deep fried everything; and it's time for the evening concerts.

Unlike some years, I'm kind of diggin' this year's selection of performers: Hinder and Papa Roach, Lifehouse, the Bangles, even REO Speedwagon (the lineup has changed some from the original schedule, with Tonya Tucker replacing Hootie and the Blowfish, by the way. Bummer) . The group I'm most excited to see, though, is the Beach Boys. Yeah, yeah, I'm not so old to remember the band from their heyday, but I do remember when it seemed they'd perform at the fair year after year.

They were, in fact, my very first concert. I didn't care that they were an oldies band, even then, because I was so excited that my sister and then boyfriend, now husband, Jeff, had agreed to take me anywhere. Also, it always just seemed appropriate having Dennis Wilson tell us to "catch a wave" just steps from Surfers' Point.

Of course, those were the days when the fairgrounds were just the fairgrounds, not Seaside Park, and the fair took place in autumn, when county fairs traditionally took place so folks could show off their harvests.

One of the advantages of having it in the fall, at least to kids, was we all got Fair Day off of school. It would be the day of the fair parade, which would march up Ventura's Main Street.

Of course, there's still a fair parade, but it seems like kids are being robbed of a day off.

After watching it pass by, we'd head for the fairgrounds with the midway rides and games and Uncle Leo's barn with the baby animals.

Each year I'd find a new favorite I'd want all my own, sometimes a floppy eared bunny, sometimes a pygmy goat, and sometimes chickens with so many small feathers they looked furry.

How about you? Have any special fair memories? We'd love to read your stories and see your photos of fair experiences from this year or the past.
Just register and post right here on YourHub.com in the special County Fair category; then, watch next week's publication to see if you made it into print.

Also, members of the YourHub.com staff will be at the fair to meet Hubsters. Stop by Star's display in the agriculture building and look for the techie types in the bright green shirts.

In the mean time, visit http://www.venturacountyfair.org for information on the fair.
