Hi everyone, I'm glad you found your way to the blog section. I've been asked, "What's a blog?" more than a few times since starting to talk to people about YourHub.com. Blog is simply short for Web log and you can think of it as an online journal where you can wax philosphic on subjects large or small, international or personal. Just remember if you choose to add the blog to the YourHub listings, anyone can read what you write. My blog, most likely, will just be about random thoughts and observations and hopefully will spur conversation either on local topics or local effects of wider-reaching topics. Please feel free to leave comments with your own views -- or better yet, start your own blog and write about it!

I'm not the best at accepting favors or compliments or things of that nature. Something comes over me and I tend to deny the compliment or feel awkward accepting the favor and often forget to simply say "thanks" ...and so it is I find myself owing many thank yous.
After my Monthers Day column, in which I mentioned my family would be spending the day in the hospital with my mom, people from all walks of my life came forward with prayers, support and kind thoughts.
To all of you, thank you (mom is amazing us with how well she's doing, by the way). And while I'm at it, a big thank you to Dr. Abou-Samra, who took such good care of her.
I owe thanks to the folks here at work who are always willing to help out in one way or another and to the people who allow me to write to you every week. And I owe a thank you to you for reading.
I definitely owe a thank you to the people who post to www.YourHub.com. You're the reason this venture into citizen journalism works.
And I suppose you can never thank friends enough for always being there.
But one of the biggest thank yous owed are to people I've never even met: the thousands upon thousands who have served or are now serving the country.
These are men and women, usually much younger than myself, putting their lives on the line for people they don't know, for a cause they might not believe in, for the simple reason their country has asked them to. I am filled with admiration (it's not something I'm brave or selfless enough to do) and gratitude.
I admit I haven't always viewed the soldiers this way.
There was a time I figured that perhaps these weren't the wisest of souls to offer to possibly die for something they might not even agree with or perhaps even understand fully.
It took me longer than many to figure out there are ideals bigger than myself and that it was me who'd been unwise enough to not see it. It was me who couldn't see, as well, how I might view a war or military action didn't have to directly correspond with how I viewed the soldiers involved in it.
So, this Memorial Day I'll be thinking of you who have or are now serving and I'll be sending out my thanks.
One way you can show your gratitude to your favorite Seabees or other military members is to share their accomplishments with the community, welcome them home or even just send a shout out online at YourHub.com.
By the way, one of the ways the Star thanks YourHub users for posting is by hosting contests where you're entered simply by submitting items to the site. Our last contest was for tickets to the Strawberry festival.
Winners, selected from each Hub, were Gerri McMillin, Mark Reyes, Erwin Leh, THE Ventura County Professional Women's Network, Arleen Adamsky and Marcia Grambling. Thank you for posting!
